I haven’t posted in a while now, so I thought I would write a post about something I’ve been pondering for the last little while – how to be successful. It’s a very simple concept actually. My stepfather had brought it up while we were having dinner one night during the past week.
He said “I’ve been around for a while, and I’ve watched a lot of people become successful, and I’ve had the opportunity to observe them. My brother is a very successful doctor, and I’ve met many successful lawyers as well, and what I noticed is that they are all genuinely nice people, and they listen to others.” So the people that are nice not to get something from others, but are nice simply just to be nice, are successful, as well as the people that actually listen, and not just hear what you are saying.
I would like to add to the wise words of my stepfather. I believe that your success in life is measured by how happy you are, not how much money you make. A contestant in Miss Teen Newfoundland & Labrador said that during her top five impromptu question, and she is absolutely correct. Who cares if you’re a multimillionaire when you just aren’t happy? We all know that money can’t buy happiness. So, in order to be successful, you also need to figure out just what it is that makes you happy, something to give you a reason to wake up with a smile on your face. I know that for me, it’s waking up knowing that I have a family as well as friends that love and support me, and that each new day is a new opportunity to make someone else smile.
For some people, what makes them happy is looking after and playing with small children, for others, it’s learning about anything and everything. One of the things that truly makes me happy is volunteering with the elderly. They are just so kind and appreciative that you took the time to visit them and give them something fun to do on a Saturday. They all have very interesting stories to tell, and I always make sure to take the time to listen to their advice, because most of them have gone through the same things that I’m going through now and more, and I know that they have the answers to many questions because they’ve already have the experience.
I just wanted to share these thoughts with everyone else, and if you’d like to share an opinion on what I believe makes people successful, please feel free to comment!
